Ontem foi anunciado que a temporada completa da nova série da ABC, Once Upon a Time, foi aprovada, após o visionamento da sua estreia por 12,3 milhões de espectadores. Na Primavera passada, tive o privilégio de trabalhar com o Designer de Produção Mark Worthington na equipa do episódio piloto, nomeadamente na criação do livro de contos, um adereço que cria a ponte entre os dois mundos da série.

Yesterday came out the news that the full season orders for ABC's new series 'Once Upon a Time' were given, after its debut being watched by 12.3 million viewers. Last Spring I had the privilege of working with Production Designer Mark Worthington in the pilot episode's team, specifically in the story book, a prop that links "tale" and "real" worlds.

Vou estar presente, de 17 a 21 de Agosto, para aprender com o seu incrivelmente variado grupo de participantes e partilhar alguma da minha visão confusa sobre o tema. Espero ver alguns de vocês por lá.

The artists group KORKALO, from Vallila, Helsinki, is hosting a quite unique event named KUORI, dedicated to the relation between art and post-catastrophic environments. I'll be there, from August 17th to the 21st to learn with its widely varied group of participants and share my own disoriented views on the subject. Hope to see some of you there.

No Verão passado, conheci, através da nossa amiga comum Ana Guimil, o escritor David Machado. Ele tinha escrito um novo livro infantil que era assustador, inteligente e divertido. Mais, queria que fosse eu a ilustrá-lo. O que se seguiu foi um diálogo em busca de um equilíbrio entre clareza narrativa e a tentativa de escapar a sucessivos pleonasmos entre imagem e texto.

Ao David, agradeço a honra do seu convite e a paciência e confiança que depositou em mim.
Alguma questão mais negativa, a culpa é toda da Ana Guimil.

Last Summer, I met, through our common friend Ana Guimil, the writer David Machado. He had writen a new children's book that was scary, smart and fun. More to it, he wanted me to illustrate it. What ensued was a dialogue in search of a balance between narrative clarity and the attempt to escape a successive stream of pleonasms between image and text.

To David, my thanks for the honour granted by his invitation and the trust he had on me.

Any nastier question, it's all Ana Guimil's fault.

Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard é um projecto paralelo à série Mouse Guard, na qual um grupo de personagens, reunidos ao longo de uma noite numa taberna, partilham as suas melhores histórias, relatos e lendas. Contudo, ao contrário da série normal, executada em modo de orquestra-de-um-homem-só por David Petersen, aqui os segmentos dos contos são escritos e desenhados por uma lista de convidados ( Jeremy Bastian, Ted Naifeh, Alex Sheikman, Sean Rubin, Alex Kain, Terry Moore, Gene Ha, Lowell Francis, Katie Cook, Guy Davis, Nate Pride, Jason Shawn Alexander, Craig Rousseau,Karl Kerschl, e Mark Smylie ). David teve a generosidade de me convidar para escrever e ilustrar um epílogo exclusivo para a edição compilada, com a missão de revelar o sonho de uma personagem que ele desenhara a dormir na taberna. Para além da oportunidade extraordinária em si, tenho de lhe agradecer também o apoio inabalável que deu a esta mini-história, mesmo sabendo que o guião a colocava no limiar da classificação etária da série Mouse Guard.

Última hora: David disse-me que a primeira edição acabou de esgotar, ao nível da distribuição.

Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard is a paralel project from the Mouse Guard universe, in which a group of characters, gathered through the night in a tavern, share their best stories, chronicles and legends. However, unlike the regular series, done in one-man-band style by David Petersen, the depicted tales are written and drawn by a list of guests ( Jeremy Bastian, Ted Naifeh, Alex Sheikman, Sean Rubin, Alex Kain [hey, guys!], Terry Moore, Gene Ha, Lowell Francis, Katie Cook, Guy Davis, Nate Pride, Jason Shawn Alexander, Craig Rousseau,Karl Kerschl, and Mark Smylie). David was generous enough to invite me to write and illustrate an exclusive epilogue for the hardcover edition, with the mission of revealing the dream of a character he had drawn sleeping in the tavern. Besides the extraordinary oportunity per se, I must thank him for the unflinching support he gave to this mini-story, even though he knew the script bordered the outskirts of the Mouse Guard series all-ages stamp.

Update: David has just told me that the 1st edition is now sold-out, at distribution level.

Os Power Pack foram criados em 1984 por Louise "Weezie" Simonson e pela desenhadora e professora June Brigman. O desafio narrativo, a que estas senhoras se propuseram, de fazer viajar este elenco infantil através de um mundo muitas vezes violentamente adulto era inédito no Universo Marvel e, até hoje, que eu saiba, irrepetido.

Power Pack were created back in 1984 by Louise "Weezie" Simonson and by artist and teacher June Brigman. The narrative challenge, to which these ladies committed themselves, of making such a young cast travel across an often violently adult world was unprecedented and, until this day, to my knowledge, unrepeated in the Marvel Universe.

Após o guião de "Wolverine: The Dust From Above", o editor Michael Horwitz convidou-me a desenhar uma história da mesma personagem, escrita pela minha boa amiga Sarah Cross, autora de "Dull Boy". O colorista foi Chris Chuckry, que conseguiu ter paciência suficiente para ler cada uma das minhas notas. A história é publicada a 2 de Fevereiro de 2011, na antologia especial Wolverine #1000. Mais imagéns em breve.

After the "Wolverine: The Dust From Above"script, editor Michael Horwitz invited me to draw a story of the same character, written by my good friend Sarah Cross, author of "Dull Boy". The colorist was Chris Chuckry, who managed to have enough patience to read every one of my notes. The story is to be published in February, the 2nd, 2011, in the Wolverine #1000 special anthology. Foi publicado hoje o primeiro artigo da Geografia das Amizades, a nova crónica de viagem do repórter e viajante Gonçalo Cadilhe, na revista Visão - Vida & Viagens. Foi graças a um convite do designer, e Editor de Arte da revista, Pedro Monteiro, que surgiu a oportunidade única de ilustrar os seus textos. Para além disso, é também um prazer raro trabalhar com o próprio Pedro, especialmente sendo ele tão aberto ao estabelecimento de um diálogo fluído entre design e ilustração.

Today was published the first article of Geografia das Amizades, the new chronicle by Gonçalo Cadilhe, reporter and traveler, for Visão - Vida & Viagens magazine. It was thanks to an invitation from the designer and Art Editor Pedro Monteiro that the unique opportunity of illustrating his texts came up. Vasco Granja 1925-2009

Queria deixar o meu agradecimento a todos os que aturaram o meu discurso no 297º encontro da Tertúlia BD de Lisboa, na última terça-feira, e em particular a Geraldes Lino, mais do que o seu organizador e fundador, um confesso militante da B.D., que entre tantos outros esforços, mantém este encontro vivo há mais de duas décadas.

Mantenho, aqui, a dedicatória dessa noite, sagrada à memória de Vasco Granja, grande divulgador e promotor da Banda-Desenhada bem como do Cinema de Animação, que nos deixou na véspera, aos 83 anos. Vasco Granja foi, para mim e para tantos outros portugueses, uma ímpar fonte de cultura de animação, a partir do seu espaço na RTP. Para além de ter lutado contra a censura do regime do Estado Novo, e às suas mãos ter sido torturado, Vasco Granja foi o único culpado de, durante os meus primeiros anos de telespectador, eu pensar que o logótipo do National Film Board do Canadá era um género de Símbolo Universal dos Desenhos Animados. Lotte Reuniger, Tex Avery, Jiri Trinka e Norman McLaren são apenas uma amostra do panteão que lhe devo e que me trouxe aqui. Obrigado

I would like to leave here my thanks to all those who endured my speech at the 297th event of the Tertúlia BD de Lisboa { Lisbon’s Comics Meeting }, last Tuesday, in particular, Geraldes Lino, who, more than the founder and manager, is the self-described militant of comics, who, among many other efforts, has kept this gathering alive for more than two decades.

I would also like to sustain that night’s dedication, sacred to the memory of Vasco Granja, great promoter of the comic-book and animation forms, who passed away just the day before, with 83 years. Vasco Granja was, for me, and so many other Portuguese, a unique source of animated culture, namely through his programs in national TV. Besides having fought against the Estado Novo’s regime censorship, at whose hands he was tortured, Vasco Granja was the sole culprit of me thinking, during my early years as a tv viewer, that the National Film Board of Canada logo was some sort of Universal Symbol of ‘Toons. Lotte Reuniger, Tex Avery, Jiri Trinka and Norman McLaren are but a sample of the pantheon I owe him and that brought me here. Thank you

There was once a day when the great mathematician Bhāskara
consulted the horoscope of his daughter, Lilavati.
The stars said that if the marriage of Lilavati didn't happen on the
most auspicious of all hours, the mathematician's daughter
would be, soon, a widow.

Bhāskara ordered then that the exactitude of the hour was to
be assured by the most precise water-clock of all India

However, while waiting for the right hour, the bride Lilavati
bent over the waters of the clock, trying to guess how much
waiting time was still ahead.
It was then that something happened. Without anyone noticing
the hour went by, and with it, the groom's longevity was gone.

At night, someone said that a pearl is something perfect that an
oyster does with what hurts her inside.

Kunta é a primeira obra de ficção produzida pela Blablabla Medi a, realizada por Ângelo Torres { European Film Promotion's 2004 Shooting Star } e com Direcção de Fotografia de Carlos Isaac, tendo a escrita do guião cabido a ambos.
Em 2007 , tive a honra de poder desenhar o story-board e alguns esboços conceptuais, durante a minha estadia na base da Blablabla, em Madrid. Já este ano, trabalhei no grafismo do genérico e dos objectos de promoção, em colaboração com a designer Vera Sacchetti.
Kunta terá a sua ante-estreia no dia 20 de Maio, às 21:30, na Sala Dr. Félix Ribeiro.

Kunta is the first fiction film produced by Blablabla Media, directed by Ângelo Torres { European Film Promotion's 2004 Shooting Star } with Cinematography directed by Carlos Isaac, the script being authored by both.
In 2007, I had the honour of drawing the story-board and some conceptual sketches, during my stay in Blablabla's base in Madrid,Spain. This year, I worked on the graphic design of the credits and promos, in collaboration with the designer Vera Sacchetti.
Kunta's pre-opening will be at Cinemateca Portuguesa on May, the 20th, at 9:30 pm, in the Dr. Félix Ribeiro screening room.

A whirlwind of a thousand images...
The IV International Comics' Festival of Beja, Portugal opens on the 10th of May, 3.00 pm, at Casa da Cultura. During the weekend the following authors will be in Beja: DAVE MCKEAN (England), DINIZ CONEFREY, FILIPE ANDRADE, FILIPE PINA, FRANTZ DUCHAZEAU (France), GIPI (Italy), JOÃO LEMOS, MARTIN TOM DIECK (Germany), NUNO SARAIVA, OSVALDO MEDINA, PEDRO LEITÃO, PEPEDELREY, SUSA MONTEIRO, and TERESA CÂMARA PESTANA as well as the authors of the TOUPEIRA collective, among many others!

Nós os 4, do ido estúdio da Bica { Ricardo Venâncio, Ricardo Tércio, Nuno "Plati" Alves e eu } vamos estar na Artist's Alley da New York Comic Con deste ano { mesas F7 a F10 }. Connosco, estarão também Rui Lacas e Jorge Coelho, do nosso novo estúdio, bem como o realizador Paulo Prazeres, da Droid-I.D a documentar a experiência.

The 4 of us, from the former Bica studio { Ricardo Venâncio, Ricardo Tércio, Nuno "Plati" Alves and me } will be at this year's New York Comic Con's Artist's Alley { tables F7 to F10 }. na antologia Actor Comics Presents.

É uma sequência muito simples, difícilmente mais que

ténuemente narrativa, mas que nos permitiu explorar o

tema de um modo bastante livre.

My first colaboration with the Hero Initiative, a 6 page

black & white story, drawn after an original idea by C.B.

Cebulski and published in the Actor Comics Presents

anthology.

It's a very simple sequence, hardly more than thinly

narrative, but one which allowed us to explore the theme

in a very free way.
